Mosopisyek of Benet indigenous lived in Mt. Elgon Forest since immemorial and they are commonly known as Ndorobo which means mountain people.
They are among indigenous marginalized community who are not recognized among the tribes in Uganda constitution. After their forceful eviction from Mt. Elgon Forest, they temporary settled in Benet settlement scheme in Bukwo, Kween and Kapchorwa district. The settlement exercise on the land meant for them 6000ha was taken by majority tribe Sabinys since they were the one heading the settlement from Zone A-F. Currently their facing the challenge of human rights abuses such as shootings, arbitrary arrests, and torture by government agencies when they access their ancestral land for cultural rights, medicinal herbal and grazing.
They value their culture and conservation of their ancestral land using their indigenous knowledge which government has failed to recognize despite the community request to conserve with the government.
This is the community where the world champions like Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo, Stephen Kiprotich, Victor Chelimo and many others hails from.
