Current initiatives of our organization
Ongoing Projects
- Planting of our indigenous trees, the community goes and collect the seedlings of the indigenous trees from our ancestral land and replace the trees destroyed through farming and timber depletion.
- Pursuing for the dialogue of joint conservation with the government in order to reduce the conflict which is going on between the community and Uganda wildlife Authority. This happened when the council of elders of 37 clans in our organization had a meeting and came up with joint conservation modal as a way to end the conflict. We submitted the report and we are waiting for the government response.
- Follow up of the identity of Mosopisyek and others in the third schedule of constitutional amendment to include those tribes which were not included in the constitution.
- Beehive project for our community groups. Groups have registered but they our local beehive made of bamboo which is scarce hence we need a modern beehive. Our community used to protect our indigenous trees by putting a beehive whereby no one can destroy since the beehive is on top of it.
- Elders in our community are passing the knowledge of indigenous conservation to our youth
- Self-sustaining projects such basket weaving is being taught to our youth by women groups within our community.
Upcoming events of our organization
- The East African indigenous assembly coming towards the end of this months of January 2024 in Uganda.
- Helping the victims of human rights abuses such as shootings receiving medical treatment
- Following the court cases of human rights abuses in Mbale high court
- Preparing for the dialogue on the ongoing destruction of crops which UWA claims to have crossed the boundary.
Past events of our organization
- Conducting training of youth on indigenous knowledge on conservation of our ancestral land
- Planting indigenous trees in areas of deforestation
- Advocating against human rights abuses and helping the victims to seek for justice.
- Following on the restitution of our ancestral land
- Advocating for the resettlement of our Mosopisyek of Benet in the land meant for their resettlement which was corrupted by leaders of the majority community allocated their people.
The East Africa Indigenous assembly led by women in kisoro ended successful on January 2024.
Now on the follow up of the policy review for Indigenous minorities in Uganda be included to be part of conservation in a workshop review this April.
Lastly, follow up of identity of mosopisyek tribe and other Indigenous who are not recognized in the constitution of Uganda.
